Giving back to local communities is a growing expectation for businesses coming from both outside and inside company walls. Community involvement is no longer a “nice to do” but a “need to do.” Don’t be one of those companies that just tosses dollars at issues for a tax write-off. Instead, use this proven, step-by-step process to maximize your company’s give-back efforts.

Strategy for Good shows you how to create all-win solutions that demonstrate your values, benefit the causes you care most about, and boost your bottom line. Your company can be engaged in heartfelt ways that positively impact your business goals, operations, and profitability.

MY STORY

I grew up in Maine, where my first taste of purpose-driven work came as a teenager in the Youth Conservation Corps. That summer taught me we are all stewards of our world—and that real change happens when people work together. One of my mentors, Gary Hirshberg, went on to lead Stonyfield Farms and became a pioneer in the socially responsible business movement, reinforcing my belief that business can be a powerful force for good.

After graduate school, I spent decades consulting with nonprofits and AmeriCorps programs, helping them measure outcomes and prove their impact. Along the way, I noticed a gap: great nonprofits often struggled to engage businesses, while businesses defaulted to one-off donations instead of building true partnerships.

To bridge that gap, I began giving workshops on win-win partnerships and eventually wrote Strategy for Good. That book opened the door for me to become the founding Executive Director of B:CIVIC, where I helped companies align their giving with business purpose and community impact.

Today, through Big Purpose Big Impact, I work with entrepreneurs and business leaders who want their generosity to do more than look nice in a press release. I help them connect the dots so giving strengthens their community, supports the causes they love, and fuels real business growth.

For me, it’s simple:
generosity should be both heart + smart.
